St Mary’s College Working group seeks meeting with Education Minister

A group campaigning to halt the closure of a secondary school in Ballisodare Co. Sligo is seeking a meeting with the Education Minister.

The St Mary’s College Working Group has formally requested Minister Joe McHugh to meet with small delegation to discuss the future of the school which is earmarked for closure in just two years time.

Meanwhile Minister McHugh has replied to a Parliamentary Question from a Sligo Deputy on the issue by stating the decision making authority for a school closure belongs to the patron of a school, and this is subject to the agreement of his department.

Fianna Fail Deputy Eamon Scanlon says Minister McHugh has told him that proposal to close a school must involve consultation with all of the relevant stakeholders.
