Councillors call for closure of St Mary’s College to be deferred

Councillors from the Sligo Municipal District of Sligo County are calling for the proposed closure of St Mary’s College in Ballisodare to be deferred by its trustees for six years.

The council also wants the Education Minister and his department to ensure funding continues to keep the school open.

Councillors say the deferral of the closure would give the school the time and opportunity to show its viable and why it should be kept open.

The motion to defer the closure was made at this morning’s municipal district meeting by Cllr Thomas Healy, seconded by Cllr Seamus Kilgannon and supported by all councillors.

Cllr Healy told Ocean FM News what he hopes the motion will achieve.
