Programme for motorists who break the law

A programme, under which motorists who break the law can seek to lessen the severity of their punishment, is being expanded to include drivers from Sligo and Leitrim.

The initiative is already in operation in Donegal for the last seven years and is run by a group called Pro Social Ireland.

Under the programme, motorists facing charges such as dangerous driving in the district court may be able to get their charges reduced by completing a driver education course.

It’s now a matter for judges dealing with driving cases to refer defendants to the course.

Road safety groups have had differing opinions on the effectiveness of the initiative.

Mary Clinton is from Donegal road safety group A-Ceart.

Mick Quinlivan, chairman of Pro-Choice Ireland, says the programme gives judges a choice.
