Striking nurses say they have tried every other avenue in effort to resolve dispute

Nurses on the picket line outside hospitals and HSE facilities across the region today have vowed to continue their campaign for as long as it takes to obtain what want in relation to pay, conditions and staff retention.

On what was a drizzly morning outside Sligo University Hospital, INMO members began their picket at 8 o’clock.

It will continue until darkness falls about 4 o clock this afternoon — but the strike action within hospitals will continue for 24-hours.

Ocean FM’s Harry Keaney reports from the picket line in Sligo.

That’s the sentiment of nurses outside Sligo University Hospital today as they continue with their second day of industrial action.

Nationally, there are up to 50,000 outpatient appointments and planned procedures cancelled today.

But these nurses insist they cannot continue working as they are any longer.

Among those with the nurses on the picket line in Sligo today is INMO president Martina Harkin Kelly.

She is strongly critical of how the government has been dealing with the nurses.
