The highest ever passenger numbers were recorded on the Sligo to Dublin rail route in 2018.
A total of 1.4 million passenger journeys were recorded on the Dublin to Sligo rail line last year a 5.1% increase on 2017.
Late last year Iarnród Éireann introduced an extra service each way on the route in response to growing passenger numbers.
Economic improvements, greater numbers of people in employment, and increased tourist numbers visiting the Sligo region have all contributed to the major increase in passenger numbers.
Spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann, Jane Cregan, says with increased congestion, more people are opting to take the train.
