Work officially due to start on major N4 project

After decades of campaigning and waiting, a government minister is at last expected to be turning the sod at the end of February to mark the official start of work on the new €100m N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin road.

Transport Minister Shane Ross is due in Sligo for what will be an historic event, which will also include an inspection of work on the new Western Distributor Road in Sligo, another key piece of infrastructure in the town.

News of Minister Ross’s visit emerged at yesterday’s meeting of councillors from the Tubbecurry Municipal District, at which they sought a meeting with him seeking increased funding for local and rural roads.

Independent Alliance Councillor Michael Clarke says the N4 sod-turning is one for which people have waited a long time.
