Call for nurses’ dispute to be dealt with in the same way as that of gardai

A Sligo/Leitrim TD is calling for nurses’ demands for improved pay and conditions to be dealt with in the same way as that of the gardai.

A special deal was reached with gardai last year in a move that averted threatened industrial action.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has now scheduled six 24-hour strikes by its 37,000 members on 30 January, as well as the 5, 7, 12, 13 and 14 February.

Meanwhile, the 6,000 members of the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) will refuse to do overtime on 31 January and the 1, 5, 6 and 7 February – escalating to strike action in tandem with the INMO on 12, 13 and 14 February.

But Fianna Fail Deputy Eamon Scanlon says nurses deserve to be treated now in the same as the gardai were last year.
