Mental health unit to be completed on time

The new mental health inpatient unit at Sligo University Hospital is expected to be completed as planned by the end of next year.

Construction began on the 25 bedroom facility last month and it’s expected the unit will be operational by early 2020.

The current service is based at St. Columba’s in Ballytivnan.

Sligo Fianna Fail Deputy Eamon Scanlon says the current facility is simply not fit for purpose has no capacity to deal with younger people with mental health issues.

Deputy Scanlon says it is essential that the timetable for operation is rigidly adhered to.
