Fianna Fail selecting its local election candidates in Sligo



Fianna Fail in Sligo is to select four of its candidates to run in the local elections next year.

The party will hold a selection convention tomorrow (Thursday) night in the Southern Hotel, with voting taking place between 8 and 9 o’clock.

Tomorrow night’s Fianna Fail convention will select candidates for two electoral areas, Sligo/Strandhill and Sligo/Drumcliffe.

It’s understood two candidates will be selected from each area.

Two outgoing councillors are seeking nominations for the Sligo/Strandhill area; they are Roasaleen O Grady and Tom MacSharry.

Three people are seeking nominations for the Sligo/Drumcliff area.

They are outgoing councillor, Seamus Kilgannon, as well as Grange businessman and former local election candidate Donal Gilroy; and Colm McGurran from Ballisodare, who runs McGurran Construction.

The two electoral areas comprise the 10-seat Sligo Municipal District, which includes all of Sligo Town and the old borough district, north Sligo, Carraroe, Ballisodare, Collooney and Ballintogher areas.

Meanwhile, the Fianna Fail candidates to run in the 8-seat Ballymote/Tubbercury/West Sligo area will be selected at a convention on Sunday week, December 16th.

It’s believed the party will select four candidates there.

The current Fianna Fail councillors there include Martin Baker, Paul Taylor, Keith Henry, and Jerry Lundy who has announced he will not be seeking reelection.

Tubbercurry Fianna Fail Cumann has selected Romald Mullarkey, past-president of the town’s Chamber of Commerce, as its candidate in run in Cllr Lundy’s place.

Cllr Joe Queenan, formerly of Fianna Fail, is now an Independent.
