8,693 people so far this year have had to wait for a bed in North West hospitals



So far in 2018, 8,693 people had to wait for a bed in North West Hospitals.

With a month still to go, 2018 has been the worst year for hospital overcrowding since the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation began recording the waiting figures in 2004.

3,884 people have had to wait for a bed in Sligo University Hospital and this figure rises to 4,809 in Letterkenny University Hospital.

The total amount of patients waiting this year is 100,428, the first time it has gone over the 100,000 mark.

2018 has also seen the monthly waiting figures surpass previous records with the INMO saying that the recruitment and retention of staff is a major concern to address the issue.

Today there are 30 peole waiting in Letterkenny University Hospital and a further 12 in Sligo University Hospital while the national number is 458
