Battle to save Gurteen post office not over yet



There are now hopes that the three-month reprieve on the closure of a south Sligo post office will lead to it being eventually kept open on a longterm, permanent basis.

Last night, campaigners opposed to An Post’s plans to close Gurteen post office received confirmation that it would remain open until the 31st of January.

It had been due to close at the end of this month.

Local Fianna Fail Councillor Paul Taylor says they are not sure what exactly the reprieve means.

But he adds that it will give more time to make an even stronger case to An Post for the long-term retention of the post office in the village:

Local Fianna Fail Deputy Eamon Scanlon says the issue has been raised numerous times in the Dail.

But he adds that the reprieve does not mean the fight is over:
