National Poetry Day: ‘Poetry can help young people face mental health issues’



The Yeats Society’s first poet-in-residence says poetry can help young people face what she has described as ‘the mental health crisis’ at present.

Irish-American poet Alice Lyons has been appointed to the role today on National Poetry Day.

She says one of her main priorities will be to work with young people.

Ms. Lyons grew up in the US but came to Ireland with her mother whose family came from Roscommon and has been living here in the North West for over 20 years.

She has written many books on poetry.

She says she wants to bring poetry back into the public domaine and use it in a positive way:
