The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has begun an investigation following the death of a woman in a road traffic incident outside Buncrana last night.
The 59-year-old local woman was struck by a car at around 9.15pm and was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is understood gardaí had encountered the woman earlier in the evening at a petrol station outside Buncrana and were concerned for her welfare.
They assisted her and brought her to her requested destination at 8.42pm.
However about a half an hour later, a report came in that a woman had been struck by a car at Umricam on the main Buncrana to Clonmany road and she had been fatally injured.
GSOC said it deployed a team of investigators to the scene and an examination of the matter is under way.
