UPDATED: 31 year-old man charged with murder of Jimmy Loughlin remanded in custody



A 31-year old Sligo man has appeared before Donegal District court on a charge of murdering another man last Saturday.

Richard McLoughlin, with an address of Apartment 19, Block D, City Gate Apartments, Connolly Street, Sligo, is charged with murdering 20-year old Jimmy Loughlin at 8 Connolly Street.

Richard McLoughlin arrived in custody at Donegal Town courthouse this morning about 10am.

With short black hair, he was unshaven and dressed in a short-sleeved blue t-shirt on what was one of the coldest mornings of the year.

A half hour later inside in the courtroom before Judge Kevin Kilrane, Garda Thomas James Gallagher, of Sligo Garda Station, gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

Garda Gallagher told the court that on February 25th 2018 at 20:48 he arrested the accused at O’Connell Street in Ballymote, Co Sligo, and conveyed him to Ballymote Garda Station, where he was charged.

Garda Gallagher said McLoughlin made no reply to the charge.

Barrister Keith O Grady, instructed by solicitor Gerard McGovern, for the accused, told the court there would be an application for urgent psychiatric evaluation.

Mr O’Grady said it was warranted in this case.

He added that there was a certain history here with the local services and his client would make them aware of this on his remand.

Mr O’Grady added that the accused is on medication, that there was a prescription available to him, and that such medication as has been prescribed to be made available to the accused while in custody.

Judge Kilrane remanded McLoughlin in custody to Harristown District Court in Castlerea, Co Roscommon, this coming Friday, March 2nd, at 10:30am for what’s known in legal terms as ‘for mention.’

The judge directed that the necessary medical and psychiatric treatment be made available to the accused.
