McDermott shines on international debut

Sligo’s Aoife McDermott has won her first test cap for Ireland, after starring for the Irish women’s team in their bonus point 35-12 win over Wales in the Six Nations on Sunday in Donnybrook.

The Riverstown native was a late inclusion in the Irish starting team in place of Nicola Fryday, having initially been named on the replacements bench.

And she went on to play the full 80 minutes in the second row, as Ireland ran in five tries in a comprehensive display.

McDermott is likely to be involved again when the Irish take on Scotland at home in their next outing, before they wrap up their campaign with an away trip to face England.

The Welsh win was Ireland’s second in the competition, following a win over Italy at home and an opening day defeat to France away.

McDermott plays with the Railway Union club in Dublin, and only took up the sport seriously in 2016, having previously represented Ireland at senior international level in basketball.
