Locals in Leitrim chase gang following break-in to Newtowngore pub

A new programme has revealed the level of fear in rural communities on crime.

An RTE Prime Time programme last night revealed how a gang were recently chased by a group of locals – some of whom were armed – following a house burglary in County Leitrim.

The incident occurred in Newtowngore earlier this month when a local publican Gerry Gorby disturbed burglars as they ransacked his home in the village.

He told RTE they don’t know what would have happened had the locals actually came across the gang.

Customers at his pub and other locals pursued the getaway car, which crashed a short distance from the scene of the crime.

The incident highlights the level of fear felt as a result of burglaries some of which are repeat break-ins and others carried out by gangs targetting different areas almost daily in all parts of the country.
