Ballymote striker named in Irish Garda squad

Ballymote Celtic striker Mark Irwin has been named in the Irish Garda squad for the European Police Championship qualifier away to Norway in Oslo next week.

The Sligo-Leitrim league has announced that Irwin has been included in the 15-man panel, consisting of members of An Garda Siochána from throughout the country.

The squad was picked following a number of trials which included matches against the Defence Forces, Shamrock Rovers, and a number of Leinster Senior league teams.

If the Irish can overcome Norway in the play-off next Wednesday, they will qualify for the European championships, which take place in Prague this summer.

Irwin is the first Garda from Sligo to be included in the men’s national representative side.

The squad is coached by former Bohemians, UCD and Athlone Town boss Aaron Callaghan.
