Historic letter written by Sean MacDiarmada returns to the county



A Leitrim businessman says has bought a significant letter written by one of the 1916 Rising leaders from the county.

The letter was handwritten in January 1915 by Sean MacDiarmada, a native of Kiltyclogher in north Leitrim.

It refers to a meeting about ‘the Emmett celebration’, which is thought to be code for the 1916 Rising. It was addressed to ‘Cathal’, believed to be Cathal Brugha.

Interestingly, it does not give the location of the meeting.

The letter was bought by pharmacist John MacManus at a rare book auction by Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers in Dublin.
