Members ordered to return to Sligo town Garda Station despite health and safety concerns

Gardai say they have been forced to move back to unsafe working conditions at Sligo Gardai Station.

Rank and File members were ordered to move back to the Pearse Street facility from temporary accommodation on Chapel Street last night.

It follows a walk-out from the station over unsafe conditions last week.

Gardai in Sligo followed up on threats from a year ago when they walked out of what they claim is an unsafe working environment at the Station on the Pearse road in Sligo last week.

One hundred and one members moved over to temporary accommodation on Chapel Street.

However, the GRA says at ten past seven last night members on duty were ordered to move back to the main Garda station.

A spokesperson said they are not happy about the move.

Senior management explained that inspections by the Fire Officer, the Health and Safety Authority and the OPW have been carried out and they deemed the building ‘compliant with statutory obligations’.

However, the GRA state that they have yet to see these reports which contradict the findings of an Independent report they commissioned which deemed the building on Pearse road ‘not fit for purpose’.

Ocean FM News is awaiting a statement from the Garda Press Office on the matter.
