Waterways Ireland employee dies in Leitrim canal accident

The man who drowned in a canal in County Leitrim has been named locally as 50-year old Patrick Moffatt, of Lurga, Drumboylan.

He was an employee of Waterways Ireland and it’s believed he was examining a lock on the Shannon-Erne waterway close to Leitrim Village at the time of the accident on Sunday evening.

His family notified the authorities when he failed to return home.

The Health and Safety Authority is carrying out an investigation.

Tributes were paid to the late Mr Moffatt at yesterday’s meeting of Leitrim County Council, at which a minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect.
