Sligo Rugby Club Notes

U-16s in action in Hamilton Park

In what was a busy weekend for the Sligo U16s, with back-to-back games at Hamilton Park, the first was a crucial cross-pool game in the ‘A’ league against NUIG and the second a tough game against Connemara/Oughtarard in the Development league.

As current leaders of the ‘A’ League, Pool 1, it was critical to remain in that position to secure home advantage in the upcoming quarter finals.

NUIG, who joined the youth league three years ago after a split from Galwegians, started well but it was not long before Sligo got into their rhythm and began to dominate and finished with a emphatic 32 points to 7 victory over the Galway side. This was a fourth consecutive win in the ‘A’ League and a huge testament to the hard work and dedication of this team.

After a short break the U16s development team took to the pitch to face a physically big Connemara/Oughtarard team, the visitors started the stronger but the Sligo boys matched them all the way keeping the scoreline 0 0 after 15 mins. The Visitors went on the score two tries in the first half and a further 3 tries in the second hald and were the deserved winners with a score line of 30 to 5. There were lots of positives from the game with impressive performances for outhalf Finn young and from newcomers Cillian McMeekin and Aaron Davey. Sligo remaining in third place in the Development league.

Connacht Senior Cup Final Beckons for Sligo

Sligo RFC                   21

Galwegians                 12

Sligo have booked their place in this year’s Connacht Senior Cup final following an impressive defeat of Galwegians under the lights at Crowley Park last Wednesday evening. Sligo, who are currently topping the table in the UBL Division 2C of the All-Ireland League, will face the winners of the other semi-final, Corinthians, who are two divisions above them.  These two sides already met in the Connacht Senior league and it was the underdogs who came out victorious with an impressive score-line of 41-16. Sligo will hope to repeat this performance in the final next month, scheduled for Saturday 16th December at a venue yet to be decided.
