EPA report raises concerns for Donegal shellfish industry



There are serious concerns for the shellfish industry in light of the concerns raised by a new Environmental Protection Agency report today.

It reveals that raw sewage continues to pour into waterways and the sea around the country and that Donegal in fact along with Cork accounts for half of the 44 locations affected.

Killybegs, Bundoran and Kilcar remain problem areas but Irish Water is working on a new sewerage treatment plants for these areas but the EPA says progress is too small.

Today farming groups including the IFA state if the upgrading of wastewater treatment plants is not expedited – jobs in the Shellfish industry could be at risk as well as our reputation as a country.
