Large numbers leave Donegal and Leitrim to commute to work

More than five and a half thousand people leave County Dongal every day to go to work.

In Leitrim, more than 4,200 go outside the county to do their jobs.

But Sligo bucks the trend: more people travel INTO the county than leave to get to their place of employment.

These are among the snapshots in the latest CSO figures from the 2016 Census, which focuses on commuting in Ireland.

In Donegal, almost 970 come into the county for work every day.

In Sligo, 3,730 travel into the county and more than 3,200 travel out of the county to work.

In Leitrim, more than 2,180 workers come into the county but 4,210 commute outside to get to their place of work.

Former Donegal Fianna Fail Councillor and Mayor Brendan Byrne is among the more than five and a half thousand who now travel outside the county to work.
