Manorhamilton councillor wants speed awareness signs

A Leitrim councillor has called for the erection of road signs that show motorists the speed at which they are driving on what, he says, is the only road into Manorhamilton that does not have such signs.

Independent Councillor Felim Gurn asked for the signs to be considered at a meeting of the Manorhamilton Municipal District of Leitrim County Council.

He said they would reduce the possibility of an accident on the Rossinver to Manorhamiton Road at the entrance to Screeney Manor Estate.

However, councillors were told that these signs do not discourage speed in the long term as speeds go back to what they previously were after a while.

They were also told there was no history of traffic accidents at this location and that no funding was provided for such a scheme.

Meanwhile, the council is to monitor speeds, carry out traffic counts and consult with the Garda about any concerns.
