UPDATED: South Donegal community in shock following fatal Louth crash

The south Donegal community of Bruckless is in mourning today following the death of three Donegal women in a crash in County Louth overnight.

A mother and daughter from the Bruckless area were killed in the crash while another friend who was a neighbour living in Bruckless but originally from the Ardara area also lost her life.

The crash happened at Aclint Bridge north of Ardee at around 1 am this morning.

The Gardai state that two people are seriously injured and have been removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

Superintendent Fergus Treanor says the stretch of road where the accident happened is particularly dangerous:

Fr James Sweeney is the Parish Priest in Bruckless.

He says there is a level of support and resilience in the community which will be vital in the days ahead.

The N2 will remain closed today between Ardee and Aclint Bridge to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

A small close-knit community in south Donegal is in shock this morning following a fatal road crash in county Louth.

A mother and daughter from the Bruckless area were killed in the crash while another lady a neighbour believed to be originally from Ardara also lost her life.

The crash happened at Aclint Bridge north of Ardee at around 1 am this morning.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses.

Garda Statement:

Gardaí in Ardee are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred south of Aclint Bridge, Ardee, Co. Louth at approximately 1 a.m. this morning, Friday 21st July, 2017.

A three car collision occurred and one female driver (39 years), and two female passengers (37 & 69 years) are deceased. Two males are seriously injured and have been removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

The N2 is closed between Ardee and Aclint Bridge to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and will remain closed for the day.

Diversions are in place but Gardaí are asking motorists using the M1 to divert at Junction 17 for Castleblayney.
