Number of people taken to hospital following incident at Tullan Strand

A number of people were taken to Sligo University Hospital this morning having got into difficulties at Tullan Strand in Bundoran.

The group, believed to be members of a Fermanagh football team, had been taking part in a training session near-by.

They had entered the water at the strand as part of their cool-down session.

The footballers were then swept out to sea by strong currents and towards the nearby rocks.

The alarm was raised by concerned onlookers before the Bundoran RNLI lifeboat was launched to assist. While the Sligo based Rescue 118 helicopter also attended the scene.

A number of quick-thinking locals entered the water on surf boards and helped the footballers to safety.

The lifeboat crew then administered first aid on shore. Some of the players had sustained bruising whilst others had swallowed a lot of sea water.

None of their injuries are believed to be life threatening.

They were then brought to Sligo for further treatment as a preecaution.
