Farmers confident that cap on payments will be removed when they meet with Department officials tomorrow

Grain farmers are confident that a €5000 cap on payments from the Tillage Crisis Fund will be removed when they meet with officials from the Department of Agriculture tomorrow.

They have suspended their 7 day sit-in at the Department.

It’s been ongoing since last week over concerns about the payments from the fund.

So far no payments have been paid to the around 300 farmers – many of whom had their grain crop destroyed following the bad weather early in 2016.

Leaks that a cap of €5000 emerged last week lead to the sit-in as farmers state it would in no way compensate them for the losses incurred.

Chairperson of the Grain Committee in Donegal, Peter Lynch says the group are satisfied with what the department officials are proposing.
