Leitrim County Council is to call on the government to consider banning the weedkiller ‘Roundup’.
The ingredient glyphosate is the controversial substance that has led to debate over its use.
In the United States recently, the state of California is now linking the substance to cancer while petitions are being signed across Europe to remove it from use.
However, there are concerns that its ban will cost the agriculture sector billions and an alternative needs to be put in place before any all out ban comes into effect.
Fianna Fail Councillor Justin Warnock raised the issue at a meeting of Leitrim County Council yesterday and got support for the ban to be put in place:
