School transport scheme meeting at Leinster House next week



A meeting is to take place next week at Leinster House to discuss what rural communities are calling ‘a crisis’ with the school transport scheme.

About 15 backbench TDs brought the issue to the attention of the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the Minister for Education Richard Bruton at a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting last night.

At the same time in south Sligo parents in Bunninaden were meeting on this very issue.

They state the changes are are forcing them to enroll their children in schools further away from their local one.

Leo Varadkar was left in no uncertain terms at last night’s parliamentary party meeting that this issue must be addressed before the Dail break at the end of July.

Sligo Leitrim TD Tony McLoughlin was among the backbench TDs who highlighted this issue and he says a meeting of the Oireachtas Transport Committee will address all stakeholders on this next week:
