There are 1,574 young people in the North West who are unemployed for 6 months or more.
In Leitrim, the figure stands at 146 people, 247 in Sligo while there are 1,181 people in Donegal.
The figures come from a question posed by Dublin North-East TD Thomas P. Broughan in May to then Social Protection Minister, and current Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, in relation to the number of people under 26 who are in receipt of jobseeker’s allowance, jobseeker’s benefit and signing for credits for six months or more.
The National Youth Council of Ireland Deputy Director, James Doorley, said: This disappointing figure is mirrored at the national level, where we have over 11,711 young people long-term unemployed.’
The NYCI is calling on Government to reduce the number to 5,000 by the end of 2018. under The EU Youth Guarantee Programme young people are guaranteed work, education or training if they have been unemployed for four months or more.
Deputy Director of the NYCI is James Doorley
