Almost €70m needed for flood defences in NW

It will cost up to €69 million to install necessary flood prevention works across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

This is according to the Office of Public Works who believe that €835 million will need to be spent nationwide to protect the country against major flooding.

However, the OPW say that the works are only recommendations and no money has yet been set aside for any of these projects.

In Sligo, €285,000 has been ear marked for works at both Coolaney and Rathbraughan.

In Leitrim, works at Drumshanbo, Leitrim Village, Carrick-on-Shannon and Dromod would cost up €9 million euro.

Five projects in South Donegal are included as part of €60 million worth of recommended work in locations across the county, including Ballybofey and Stranorlar, Donegal Town, Killybegs, Ardara and Glenties.
