Sligo councillors keep options open on Greenway plans

Sligo councillors have decided to keep their options open in the County Development Plan of developing a greenway on OR alongside the closed railway line between Collooney in County Sligo and Bellaghy on the Sligo/Mayo border.

The council received submissions seeking a change in the wording of the existing plan, which would have called for the greenway to be developed ON the greenway and not alongside it.

It has been argued that putting the greenway on the line would be cheaper and that there is no likelihood in the short-term of the line being used by trains.

Council Chief Executive Ciaran Hayes pointed out there were two very strong lobbies on this issue, one for a greenway and the other for a rail line, and they ran the risk of being divisive if they decided that the greenway should only be ON the line.

In the end, councillors decided to keep their options open by retaining the wording that the greenway could be ON or ALONGSIDE the rail line.
