Bill to ban fracking put forward by North West TD ‘progressing’



The Minister of State for Natural Resources says it’s hoped that proposed amendments to a bill to ban fracking in Ireland will be ready within the next month.

The bill has been put forward by Sligo Leitrim Fine Gael TD Tony McLoughlin, who asked for an update on Cabinet discussion on his proposed legislation in the Dail yesterday.

His question followed the unanimous decision this week by Sligo County Council to retain a ban on fracking in its County Development Plan despite being advised it might be premature and beyond the authority of the council.

It’s understood amendments are also expected from the attorney general’s office before Deputy McLoughlin’s bill comes back before the Oireachtas committee dealing with it.
