Postmasters across region urged to join GPO protest tomorrow

Postmasters across the North West are being urged to attend a protest outside the GPO in Dublin tomorrow.

The protest is to highlight their intention to resist any closure of post offices driven by An Post and takes place at 11am.

It follows reports this weekend that more than 200 post offices may have to close as An Post strives to cut losses of €45m last year.

In this region, uncertainty looms over the futrue of two post offices, Ballygawley in County Sligo and Blacklion in County Cavan.

The Irish Postmasters Union want the Post Office Network plan put together by businessman Bobby Kerr to be published and implemented rather than a separate plan being put together by An Post.

In a statement the IPU said the Kerr report is what they signed up to and agree with and An Post should not be allowed ignore this.

Breid Gallagher is a postmistress in Donegal and North West representative to the IPU and she says they no longer know where they stand.
