Leitrim Councillor is shocked at amount of drugs cultivated and taken in county



A Leitrim Councillor says he’s shocked at the level of drugs being cultivated and taken in the county.

Sinn Fein Councillor Padraig Fallon was responding to confirmation by a Garda Superintendent at a recent Joint Policing Committee meeting that most of the people recently involved in cultivating or selling illegal drugs in the county were Irish people.

Superintendent Kevin English states there has been a number of significant drug seizures in Leitrim recently but he says the perception that those involved are mainly foreign national is false.

Inspector English said when it comes to so-called ‘grow-houses’ in particular one-third of the people involved were foreign nationals with two-thirds being Irish.

He said his main concern is where those drugs end up.
