Schools facing closures due to lack of substitutes

National schools across the North West are facing closure when a teacher is out sick due to a lack of available substitutes.

Newly qualified teachers are finding it easier to get full time employment in Australia, Dubai and Great Britain than stay in Ireland for subbing hours.

This has meant there is a lack of substitute teachers available to fill in when needed, particularly in regional schools.

Vincent Duffy is the INTO representative for Mayo and the North West and he told Ocean FM it’s becoming a major issue on health and safety grounds.
