Consultant says more beds and not more consultants is the answer to ED crisis



A surgeon in Donegal says an increase in consultants will make no difference to the ongoing trolley crisis in hospitals.

Letterkenny University Hospital based consultant Peter O’Rourke says that the size of emergency departments and number of available consultants has never been the problem, it’s always been a lack of beds.

LUH has been badly-affected by the trolley crisis this winter with the full capacity protocol having to be implemented on a number of occasions already this year.

Today again there are 23 patients on trolleys there according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

Mr. O’Rourke says it doesn’t matter how many consultants there are if there is nowhere for them to see patients:
