Sligo councillor says 1947 Act allows Minister give funding to libraries



A Sligo county councillor says library services remain under threat unless money is provided to replace staff who will be retiring this year.

Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Healy says that under the Public Libraries Act 1947, Local Government Minister Simon Coveney has the power to provide money for the library service regardless of the stringent financial plan now imposed on Sligo County Council.

This year in Sligo, three library staff — one fulltime and two parttime branch librarians — are due to retire.

Cllr Healy sees the provision of money under the 1947 Act as the way to deal with the uncertainty now over library services in all areas of County Sligo:
