Boat thought to belong to Cuban refugees found on North Sligo coast

What is thought to be the remains of a boat used by refugees trying to make the journey from Cuba to Florida in the United States has been discovered off the North Sligo coast.

Local man Gordon Fallis came across the strange looking vessel while walking his dogs along Cliffoney beach.

It is made of a metal frame, partly covered in yellow tarpaulin.

It appears water bottles and foam were used for buoyancy. A car engine was connected to a broken propeller.

It’s thought it may have been used by Cuban refugees because the water bottles have labels which indicate they come from Cuba.

From November 2015 to October 2016, the US Coastguard picked up more than 5,200 Cubans at sea.
