Nollaig na mBan events taking place in Manorhamilton & Sligo

Events marking what is called Little Christmas, Women’s Christmas or Nollaig na mBan, are taking place throughout the region today (Friday).

Many of them are part of a festival, called the Herstory Festival.

Among them are events taking place in The Glens Centre in Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, starting with a vintage tea party at 11 o’clock this morning.

Activities continue in The Glens Centre throughout the day, ending with a classic movie double bill featuring ‘Woman of the Year’ and ‘Thelma and Louise.’

The first film starts at 7pm.

In City Hall in Sligo, artist Emma Stroude is exhibiting a series of drawings.

She will give a talk at 6:30pm on her art and the lives of the women she has drawn.

Her work was featured during the 1916 commemorations last Easter on Rockwood Parade, alongside the Garavogue River in Sligo.

However, as historian and author Joe McGowan from Mullaghmore in North Sligo explains, there are many celebratory aspects to January 6th:
