Supreme Court to hear arguments in McDonagh case

A case involving a Sligo man who was awarded €900,000 eight years ago in a libel action in the High Court is due before the Supreme Court this morning.

Martin McDonagh was awarded the amount when he claimed he was defamed by an article in the Sunday World newspaper.

The article was published after gardai seized €500,000 worth of drugs in Tubbercurry in 1999.

However, the three-judge Court of Appeal held the jury verdict in the High Court could not be allowed to stand and that it was ‘perverse.’

The seven-judge Supreme Court will this morning hear arguments from lawyers from both sides on whether or not the Court of Appeal was correct.

It’s thought the Supreme Court will reserve its decision until later.

The case is listed for hearing this morning at 11 o’clock.
