Sharp increase in number of patients on trolleys



The number of people waiting on trolleys in Sligo has risen sharply in the past decade.

Sligo University Hospital had a sharp increase with 47 on trolleys in 2006 rising to 180 last month while Letterkenny saw a dramatic decrease from 204 ten years ago to 38 in May 2016.

Across Ireland the numbers have risen by 57% in the past decade.

Figures released by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association today show that in May of 2006 there were 4,214 patients on trolleys compared to 6,627 in May of this year.

Year on year there was a 14% reduction in the number of admitted patients on trolleys nationwide compared from May 2015 to May of this year.
