A North West MEP says Irish politicians who are trying to blame Brussels for water charges have no legal basis for their arguments.
Independent MEP Marian Harkin is asking if Irish politicians can continue to use the time-honored excuse that ‘Brussels made us to do it’ in relation to water charges.
She says Irish politicians who are trying to blame Brussels are pursuing their own agendas.
She says Ireland has an opt-out it could take advantage of while, also, the EU Court of Justice has said member states can decide on the recovery of costs without extending it to water services.
