There was an increase in car sales at garages in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim so far this year.
Official figures released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that total new car sales are up 23% (99,740) on the same period last year (80,889) nationally.
The local figures follow the national trend with the highest increase in sales in Donegal and Sligo at almost 30% and 28% respectively.
In Leitrim, however, the increase in sales compared to the same period last year is smaller at 14%.
A spokesperson for SIMI said that since the introduction of the dual registration plate system, the percentage of new car registrations in the second half of the year has been increasing year on year from 14% in 2011 to 34% last year.
The most popular car brands are Volkswagen, Yoyota, Hyundai, Ford and Nissan.
