Enniscrone Councillor confident Blue Flag will return next year

An Enniscrone Councillor says he’s disappointed the local beach has not retained it’s blue flag status.

However, Councillor Joe Queenan says the community will do everything in their power to ensure it is returned next year.

The Blue Flag is an international award for beach excellence operated in Ireland by An Taisce and the Department of the Environment.

An Taisce announced the 2016 awards yesterday with Sligo retaining the Blue Flag awarded to Rosses Point last year while Donegal held on to its 13 Blue Flags including Bundoran and Rossnowlagh.

However, Enniscrone failed to meet just one of the 32 criteria needed for blue flag status – that of water quality.

Joe Queenan says it’s disappointing and that it stems from an unlucky sample taken following flooding in the area in 2014:
