Future of popular Roundup weedkiller remains in doubt



The European Commission has still failed to get a qualified majority to make a final decision on whether or not to ban the weedkiller Roundup.

Last week a vote was cancelled in Brussels on the re-authorisation of gly-phosate the key ingredient in Roundup as the Commission said that it would not proceed to a vote without a solid qualified majority of Member States.

But if a resolution is not found shortly the authorisation on the ingredients in roundup will run-out and that would mean there would be no further sales of the product according to Midlands North West MEP Marian Harkin.

The weedkiller has been the source of a number of conflicting reports in recent years amid reports it could be carcinogenic.

The World Health Organisation says it could be while the World Food Safety Authority says it’s ‘unlikely’ to be carcinogenic.
