Sligo beaten in Philly McGuinness league final

There was no joy for the Sligo under-20 gaelic footballers in Thursday’s Philly McGuinness Development League final in Bekan as four Westmeath goals edged them to a three-point victory on a final scoreline of 4-11 (23) to 2-14 (20).

The midlanders led by six points at the interval  – and while Sligo did manage to close the gap to two points in the closing stages – Westmeath’s fourth goal, in added time, sealed victory.

Nonetheless, this warm-up competition will have been a useful exercise for Dessie Sloyan’s side.

They enjoyed three victories in the group stages as they prepare for the start of the Connacht under-20 football championship later this year.

The competition is named in memory of former Mohill and Leitrim footballer Philly McGuinness, who died in 2011 from a head injury sustained in a club game.
