Basketball season cancelled again

Basketball Ireland has cancelled the 2020-21 season.

It says the current Covid restrictions mean no competitions would be able to be played before the traditional end point of the season in April.

It’s hoped that that competitive basketball can resume in April or May with 3×3 tournaments and other events, government restrictions permitting.

Basketball had originally hoped for a return to play by the end of February.

Basketball Ireland Secretary General, Bernard O’Byrne said “While this is a disappointing to announce the end of our normal 2020-21 season, we hold out hope that we can get some competitive basketball underway during the summer months. Our target is now to open the 2021-22 season as normal in September, across all levels and all competitions.”

Shane O’Meara, who’s head coach of the EJ Sligo All-Stars gave his reaction to Ocean FM Sport:
