Donegal County Council is advising that landowners will have an extra day this year to cut their hedgerows.
As it’s a leap year, the 29th of February only comes around every four years and allows an extra day for farmers and property owners alike to trim their hedges.
Hedgerows in Ireland cannot be cut or trimmed from the beginning of March until the end of August due to the Wildlife Act of 1976.
This allows two-thirds of Ireland’s bird species to nest in the hedges along with a variety of other animals and plants.
Some hedgerows may be cut if they pose a risk to public health and safety.
