Aodh Ruadh GAA Club Notes

Football

Aodh Ruadh made it two successive league victories with a 0-13 to 0-6 home win over Dungloe. Aodh Ruadh did the job with a modicum of comfort, points from Shane McGrath and David Dolan (f) and four from Diarmaid McInerney (3f) helping the homesters to a 0-6 to 0-1 half-time lead. Further points from McInerney and Shane McGrath put Ballyshannon well clear before Dungloe mounted a bit of a rally. However further points from Darren Drummond, McInerney (2) and Nathan Boyle closed out the game for James O’Donnell’s men. We will have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. The reserves game against Dungloe was postponed.

Sunday coming sees Aodh Ruadh on their travels again, this time another long trip north to Cloughaneely. The reserves get proceedings under way at 12.30pm and are followed by the seniors at 2pm.

Hard luck to Senan Rooney, Shane Gillespie and the Donegal under 17 team on their defeat to Tyrone in Ulster championship over the weekend.

The under 16s had a great win in their opening game of the championship. They travelled to Buncrana last Tuesday and came away with a 4-10 to 1-8 victory. Aodh Ruadh had the better of the exchanges in the first half and went in at the break with a five point lead. They built on that over the course of the second half to run out 11 point victors with Cian Rooney top scoring on 2-2. Senan Rooney was in dominant mood in the middle third and further back Aaron Neilan was composed and effective at half back, but this was a good all-round team performance as Ballyshannon got their championship campaign off to the perfect start. Their next outing in the competition will be against Naomh Columba, but county action means that fixture is currently on ice.

The under 14s have their first game of the season this Wednesday when they are away to Four Masters. Throw-in is at 7pm, players to be down at Tir Chonaill park for 6.15pm.All support much appreciated.

The under 12s entertained Ardara senior team in Father Tierney Park on Friday. The hosts played very well but came out on the wrong side of the result despite a trojan effort from Tommy Clyne and Killian Bradshaw. The juniors took on Ardara at home on Monday evening and again it  was the visitors who took the honours. Morgan McNamee worked his socks off, while Killian McPhelim also had an excellent game and Donagh Kelly hit some good points. The team are away to Naomh Conaill this Friday evening in their next league outing. Players are to be at the park for 4.30pm ahead of departure to Glenties.

Our under 8s and under 10s have been invited to play Saint John’s in Sligo town on Wednesday evening. Saint John’s GAA club, is at Cuilbeag, out by Carraroe and players are to be at the Saint John’s grounds for 6pm with throw-in at 6.30pm. The under 8s will have their first blitz of the season in Glenties on Saturday morning. Under 10 training continues on Mondays and Fridays  from 7.15pm to 8.15pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Under 8 training continues on Thursdays from 6.15pm until 7.15pm. All boys born in 2010 and 2011 are welcome to come up and join in.

Under 6 training continues on Fridays from 6pm to 6.45pm at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Ladies

Realt Ruadh are back on their winning streak after their a fine performance over Four Masters on Sunday in Bundoran. Playing through the heat and a blinding sun, the girls powered through to secure a 1-11 to 0-6 victory. The forwards started the match with a few points, but it was the younger girls who really set the tone. Cáit Gillespie landed three points and added a goal towards the end of the first half. Rachel McGee dominated the full forward position and provided her fair share of points with Megan McEniff also chipping in on a bright morning. Meanwhile the impressively consistent Rebecca Gillespie played another blinder. Particularly impressive and key to the final victory was the tight back line display and quick thinking actions from the duo goalie team, Natasha Gormley in the first half and Sarah Daly in the second who ensured the Red Stars kept a clean sheet. The girls will be looking to extend their winning run when they travel to take on Robert Emmet’s next Sunday at 11am.

The under 16s chalked up their first win of the season last Tuesday when they entertained Naomh Conaill in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Goals from Sarah Jane Keon and Danielle Gallagher set the side on their way and a Laoise Kelly goal before the break gave the girls a good cushion coming in at half-time. The second half was more evenly contested, but Aodh Ruadh had done enough to earn a merited win. Best for Aodh Ruadh was Caitlin McGarrigle who was outstanding in midfield alongside Caoimhe Keon. Ella Clancy was superb at centre forward, with Danielle Gallagher also in fine form. The half back line of Leah O’Brien, Grainne Maguire and Eilish Gallagher were all excellent while Alicia Clyne was strong between the posts. The girls are at home again this Tuesday when they entertain Termon at 7.30pm. Players to be at the park for 6.30pm. A big Ballyshannon support would be most welcome on the evening.

Training for under 14 girls continues this Tuesday and Thursday at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh from 4.15pm to 5.30pm.

Aodh Ruadh under 12s welcomed Saint Eunan’s to Ballyshannon on Saturday. With numbers depleted it was going be tough for the homesters, but both teams did themselves proud with two excellent displays of football. The first game got off to a good start for Aodh Ruadh, but then Saint Eunan’s just edged in front. A few changes at half-time saw our girls getting back into it, but Saint Eunan’s got a few cheeky goals and ran out deserved winners. Best for Aodh Ruadh were Lauren Foy, Fódhla Sheerin and Aisling Patton. The second game was a tighter affair and the girls worked hard to the bitter end, but again Eunan’s took the spoils. Best for Aodh Ruadh were Andrea Moore and Aimee Roper. We wish Leah Caldwell a speedy recovery after injuring her arm. We will have pictures from the day’s action up on aodhruadh.org. Training again Wednesday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh from 5.30 to 7pm. The last league game takes place this Saturday away to Bundoran.

Under 10 girls training continues at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh this Tuesday from 7.15pm to 8.15pm. Remember, all players are required to wear gum shields.

Under 8 training continues this Tuesday at 6pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Under 6 training continues on Friday evenings in Creevy National School at 6pm.

A reminder that the rescheduled Duck Race takes place this Saturday at 2pm. Any parents who still have cards are asked to leave them with Lorraine McPhelim.

Best of luck to the under 15 county ladies who take on Monaghan this Saturday, especially to our own Sarah Jane Keon and Eilish Gallagher. The team have won all their games so far and a win will possibly put them in an Ulster League final.

Good luck also to the under  14 county ladies who play their Ulster semi-final this Saturday against Fermanagh. Aodh Ruadh are represented by Lucy McGlynn, Katie O’Brien, Caoimhe Hughes-O’Brien, Aoibheann McGarrigle and Áine Hill on the squad.

Hurling

The under 14s had another convincing win at home to Four Masters on Thursday last. They have no game this week.

On Monday next we host the inaugural Billy Finn / John Larkin Memorial under 14 tournament. We have had a great response with eight teams confirming their attendance. Tuam (Galway), Tooreen (Mayo), Omagh (Tyrone), Keady (Armagh), Ballycastle (Antrim), Loch Mor Dal gCais (Antrim), Na Magha (Derry) and ourselves. Play gets underway at 10.30am. We’d be delighted to see former colleagues and club mates of these two great characters call in for a cup of tea and a chat throughout the day and enjoy what should be a great day of hurling.

Training for all age groups on Sunday at 12 noon. All are welcome from 5 years upwards. For any information contact John Rooney on 086-2587793.
